Ohio’s 100 butterfly Division II state record has fallen at the state meet.
Grandview Heights’ Carrie Furbee accomplished that feat in her final high school swim in 53.36 seconds, winning the state title in the process. It was 0.07 seconds faster than the previous record held by current Michigan swimmer Ella Jo Piersma.
While that’s all quite interesting, cooler still is how Furbee did it.
The past two seasons, Furbee swept the state titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events – four state titles in total. At the end of the season, Furbee was a Central Ohio High School Sports Awards Girls Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year nominee.
She swam the 50 freestyle this year – getting bumped out at sectionals for a false start – and concentrated on the butterfly.
The decision paid off in a big way.
“Coming off that second turn, it definitely hurts in the 100 fly – it’s a really hard swim – but I had to dig in to get it done,” Furbee told the Columbus Dispatch’s Dave Purpura. “I had to stop breathing in the second half of the last 25 (yards), just put my head down and go.”
Furbee is committed to swim at Ohio State University next season.

Furbee will likely be a candidate for the Girls Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year honor at the 2024-25 Central Ohio High School Sports Awards, which are June 18 at Upper Arlington High School. The show is produced with the support of Meijer. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
