Mindy Kaling is taking the internet by storm! But this time, not for her hard-earned accolades!
Fans of the American actress, comedian, screenwriter, and producer are worried about her well-being, as Kaling was spotted looking nearly ‘unrecognizable’.
What happened?
Recently, Mindy Kaling took to Instagram with a carousel of pictures from a screening of her short film Anuja at Netflix’s Los Angeles offices. One of those images showed the former Office star posing in a bathroom and rocking a black, high-necked gown with gold buttons down the front. As she posted a bunch of photos, she wrote, “The team behind Anuja is made up of true artists and pulling off this film was such a feat. Thanks to everyone for coming out and if you haven’t had a chance to watch Anuja yet, check it out on Netflix now!!”
Before, when the Office star spoke about adopting healthier eating and exercise habits, the fans have been nothing but supportive towards her. However, this time, some supporters expressed concern after seeing a new photo in which the actress looked nearly unrecognizable.
In the comments, Kaling’s followers could not help but comment on her slimmed-down physique and how she looked in her stunning dress.
While some Instagram users wrote comments like, “Never looked better,” “Mindy you look fantastic,” “I keep thinking ‘this is the prettiest she’s ever looked’ and then you come back proving me wrong. THIS IS PERFECTION,” some of them seemed to have other concerns too. One of them apparently didn’t recognize Kaling, and wrote, “I was scrolling quickly and thought this was Kate from Bridgerton!” Another fan expressed their worry, by saying, “OMG are you okay!”
But, has Mindy Kaling’s weight loss been really ‘unhealthy’?
The truth behind the ‘drastic’ weight loss:
Despite speculation that weight-loss drugs like Ozempic are responsible for the changes in Kaling’s physique, the actress has shut down the rumors.
Let’s take a look at Mindy Kaling’s wellness routine.
Mindy’s diet plan:
Over the past few years, Mindy has made it clear that she’s made some big changes to her diet and workout routine. So how does she feel her healthiest? Here’s what she’s shared. Mindy doesn’t restrict herself anymore. Last year, she told Today, “If there was an awards show or I was shooting something, I used to be the person that was like, ‘I have to stop eating these foods, or six weeks beforehand, I’m only going to juice’.”
Now, Mindy eats her favorites, but less often. She said, “I’m never going be someone who can just have spinach and salmon every day. I just am really for the first time in my life, trying moderation, and I love it.”
Mindy previously told Women’s Health that she looks at food as fuel to help give her energy to play with her kids. Breakfast might be a green smoothie or Huevos rancheros, and lunch is usually sushi or a turkey sandwich. For dinner, Mindy usually opts for fish or chicken curry. The writer-actress also calls dessert a “non-negotiable.”
Mindy focuses on hydration first thing. In fact, she told WH that she aims to drink 50 ounces of water before 7 a.m. As per her, “That’s a huge weight off my shoulders because I think hydration is so key. Half the times I’m in a bad mood it’s because I’m not hydrated, so for me that’s super important.”
The impactful workouts:
In 2023, she told PEOPLE, “The truth is that I spend so much time and energy trying to be healthy. I run or hike 20 miles a week and I lift weights. It’s a big commitment for me. I basically live in workout clothes so I can get it in.” She added, “I know people are really interested in the changes in my body, and I think it’s flattering but sometimes it’s just a little much, so I try not to tune into it.”
Mindy gets up at 5:45 a.m. on most days, and she’ll kick things off with a sunrise jog or yoga flow class three days a week, she told WH. The mom-of-two is also big on walking. She told Prevention, “If I can get in about 15 to 20 miles of walking a week, I have mental clarity, I feel like I get better sleep at night.”
But if she can’t go on a long stroll, Mindy will find ways to sneak in steps. She once told E!News, “I will go on a two-mile walk after dropping my kid off at school and call a friend from high school to catch up on the phone. It doesn’t feel like I’m working out, but I am, and I enjoy that I get to socialize too.”
The Office alum lifts weights, as well. Mindy told Prevention, “I remember as a kid, always hearing, ‘When you get older, you lose muscle mass. You need to start lifting.’ But so much of the focus when I was younger was ‘How do I be skinny?’” Now, she said she sees, “first-hand, just how important” it is to strength train.
Confidence is the key:
Mindy is way more self-assured than she used to be. In 2022, she told PEOPLE, “I’m feeling really confident in my body these days, which is not something that I’ve been able to say for my whole life.” She’s also pleased that, as she told Today, “all my clothes kind of fit. It’s so easy to get ready and that’s great. I feel happy about that.”
But Mindy is focused on weight loss for her health, not how she looks. “I know people are really interested in my body and the changes in my body, and I think it’s flattering and sometimes it’s just a little much, so I don’t try to tune it in too much,” she told People. “The truth is that I spend so much time and energy trying to be healthy.” Over the years, Mindy has “tried really hard” to get over the idea of losing weight for “vanity.” And as Mindy told PEOPLE, she had finally done it. In her words, “For me, healthy is working out, moving my body a lot, keeping hydrated, and then not having negative connotations around working out and making me feel like if I don’t do this, then I won’t be something else. And that’s taken a long time to kind of shed those old ideas of working out.”
