TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) – An 18-year-old Ohio man is in critical condition after a meet-up for a shoe sale turned into a robbery.
Family members say Joaquin Simmons, a Woodward High School student, suffered a traumatic brain injury in the incident and is fighting for life.
The 18-year-old loves fashion and his family said he often sells clothes and other items online through Facebook Marketplace.
But last Saturday’s sale didn’t turn out to be a simple transaction.
Simmons’ family member told officers an argument broke out over a pair of Balenciaga shoes and their authenticity and price.
The person Simmons was meeting came to the meet-up spot with someone in their passengers seat, a family member told police.
That family member said they felt uneasy about the situation and took a picture of the vehicle, but that’s when the passenger snatched the shoes and they attempted to drive off.
Simmons refused to let go of the shoes, and the vehicle kept going. He continued to cling on, but he was eventually pushed off the vehicle, his family said. “Now, our baby is fighting for his life.”
“We saw him get flung from the car going about 70 to 80 mph,” the family member shared.
Simmons’ family members said they tried to chase the vehicle down but could not catch up.
Toldeo police gathered evidence from the scene but noted in their report that the people involved were not immediately identifiable from surveillance video in the area.
Simmons just turned 18, and he was supposed to graduate from Woodward this year. His loved ones say he continues to be in critical condition at the hospital.
Authorities urged anyone with further information to contact them at 419-255-1111.
