BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A new bill has been introduced to the Kentucky Congress aimed at supporting efforts to educate Kentucky youth on the dangers of vaping and smoking.
A few years ago the Kentucky Attorney General’s office settled a lawsuit where the state received a little over $14 million dollars from Juul Labs. Now, House Bill 187 will take the remaining money, a little over $7 million dollars, and use it to fund anti-smoking and anti-vaping programs aimed at educating Kentucky youth about the dangers of smoking.
“Juul Labs, as you may recall, entered into an agreement with Kentucky a few years ago, and Kentucky received about $14.4 million in gross proceeds over an extended amount of time. And that money, we feel that those proceeds from the dual settlement should be used for what they were intended for, and that is to prevent kids from getting addicted to these very harmful e-cigarette and vaping products” said Doug Hogan, Government Relations Director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.
One Warren County Public Schools staff member says intervening in a child’s life and teaching them the dangers of vaping. He says kids are falling victim to predatory smoking products are getting younger and younger
“We have seen the age of vapes being utilized even down in the elementary all the way up to, of course, through high school. But we’ve had issues with vapes being used as early as first or second grade” WCPS Assistant Superintendent Kyle Cassady said.
The bill still has to go through the legislative process but leaders are looking forward to discussing the bill in Frankfort and helping the youth of Kentucky.
