ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday the agency is looking into a Facebook post that appears to depict nine dead peafowl — a mix of male peacocks and female peahen.
“I was horrified,” said Mo Jacobson, an animal rights’ advocate. “Who would want to hurt an animal that’s so innocent?”
Jacobson included a photo of the ostensibly dead peafowl in Facebook post that elicited dozens of comments and shares this week.
Donning the nickname the “Peacock Lady,” Jacobson was instrumental in establishing her nearby community of Oakland as a bird sanctuary.

“These animals were literally around there before people started living there,” Jacobson said of the gated community of Deer Island, where she said the photo was taken.
She told News 6 that someone in Deer Island shared the photo with her, claiming up to 30 peafowl were found dead in a span of two weeks earlier this year.
News 6 has not independently verified the number of peafowl that died or whether any of the peafowl died by nefarious means.
Jacobson’s property is home to several peafowl that have been a part of the fabric of the area for decades.
“We come by here every day with our dog to see the peacocks,” said Michaela Priddy, who walked by with her husband as News 6 was interviewing Jacobson. “We love having them here.”
Her husband was baffled to learn why News 6 was there.
“Why anybody would want to kill them is just insane,” said William Priddy. “If you do want to harm them, just stop and give it to us.”
Jacobson told News 6 that many neighbors and visitors often walk by her house to see if they can spot the peafowl.
“Look at them,” she said, pointing to the youngest peafowl of the group. “They’re beautiful.”
