The recent vaping ban in Vietnam and Maldives has been lauded by health experts. Mothers Against Vaping, a united front of mothers fighting the vaping crisis among youth, hailed the definite steps taken by the governments of Vietnam, Maldives and Belgium.
Hefty fines will be levied on tourists arriving in these countries with vapes. Possession, sale and use of vapes and liquids is banned in the countries. In Vietnam, using e-cigarettes faces fines of up to 2 million dong.
Australia, India, Turkey, Brazil, and Singapore are other countries that do not allow travellers to bring vapes with them.
What is vaping?
Vaping is similar to smoking a cigarette. Vaping involves the inhaling of an aerosol created by an e-cigarette. Nicotine is the primary agent. Vaping heats tiny particles out of a liquid rather than burning tobacco.
What are the different types of vapes?
Pod vapes, vape pens, disposable vapes, MTL vapes, starter kits and sub-ohm vapes are some of the different types of vapes.
What is the difference between vaping and smoking cigarettes?
In the case of e-cigarettes, it heats liquid to make an aerosol, while cigarettes burn tobacco, which creates smoke. Both involve inhaling nicotine.
In e-cigarettes, the nicotine vapour is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. It triggers dopamine release which sustains addiction.
Experts point out that vaping poses a greater danger to children and teenagers.
5 harmful effects of e-cigarettes/vaping
1. Nicotine can harm adolescent brain development
2. Contain cancer-causing chemicals
3. Heavy metals, like lead and nickel cause health damages
4. Flavourings contain diacetyl, a chemical linked to a serious lung disease.
5. Affects mental health and quality of life. Addiction can lead to depression, mood swings and other mental health issues.
Though banning cannot completely remove the availability of e-cigarettes for children and the youth, it still acts as a deterrent and strong enforcement can make a difference.
Vietnam and Maldives have joined about 33 countries that have banned vape consumption, including India. At the same time, Belgium joins about 87 countries which regulate electronic nicotine delivery systems.
Belgium became the first country in the European Union to ban the sale of disposable vapes with the aim of preventing nicotine addiction.
