Kanye West’s X account has been deactivated following a series of anti-Semitic and misogynistic comments for the past couple of days. However, it was immediately not clear if the 47-year-old rapper, who legally changed his name to Ye, deactivated the account on his own or if X took it down.
Before his account was locked out, West had a word of appreciation for X owner Elon Musk, thanking him for “allowing him to vent”. “I’m logging out of Twitter (now X). I appreciate Elon for allowing me to vent. It has been very cathartic to use the world as a sounding board,” he wrote in his final post.
The development came after West ranted about Taylor Swift, who was at the Super Bowl to cheer for her boyfriend Travis Kelce, who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. Swift was booed by Philadelphia Eagles fans whenever she was shown on the big screen at the event.
“If it’s about the culture, why are we letting Taylor Swift be seen on TV singing a song about taking a black man down and accusing of things that can take a black man down for life,” West said in an apparent reference to Kendrick Lamar’s half-time performance at the Super Bowl.
The reigniting of the long-time feud between West and Swift goes back to 2009 when the rapper abruptly interrupted the latter and snatched the microphone from her during the MTV Video Music Awards.
At that time, Swift was accepting the Best Female Video award for her popular track, ‘You Belong With Me’, which was nominated alongside Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’. West had said he was happy for Swift, but he wholeheartedly backed Beyonce, saying she had the “best videos of all-time”.
WAS KANYE WEST’S X ACCOUNT SUSPENDED?
West, who has often made headlines for his hate-filled rants on X, had called himself a “Nazi”, and asked for music mogul Sean P Diddy, who is imprisoned on sex trafficking charges, to be released from prison.
He also put up clothes, including a white t-shirt which had a black Swastika (the Nazi symbol propagated by Adolf Hitler) in a bizarre Super Bowl ad, criticised overweight women and even posted porn on his X account.
Subsequently, West’s X account had a “sensitive content warning” tag due to the nature of his posts. The offensive slurs prompted celebrities such as David Schwimmer and Piers Morgan to demand X to ban West from the platform.
West also unfollowed Swift on X, followed Musk, and publicly called on US President Donald Trump to pardon Combs.
Earlier, the rapper was blocked from X for nearly eight months for violating rules barring incitement to violence. He was also in the news recently, after he asked his wife, Bianca Censori, to remove her black coat and appear virtually nude at the Grammys red carpet.
Amid widespread criticism, West defended Bianca, asserting her Google search numbers surpassed those related to the Grammys. Bianca had also defended the rapper over his hate-filled posts.
Earlier, West claimed he was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and said he was actually suffering from autism. He argued that his behaviour was due to autism, and that he refused medication as it “blocked his creativity”.
