MANHATTAN, IL — Manhattan police are investigating after a tobacco and vape shop was hit in a smash-and-grab burglary early Thursday.
Police around 5:15 a.m. found a broken glass door at Southside Tobacco & Vape, 24520 S. Rte 52. Suspects in a dark-colored SUV used an unknown item to shatter the door, then stole merchandise including cartons of cigarettes once inside, police said.
Police cleared the building for suspects before notifying the business’ owners.
Detectives are reviewing video surveillance and following other leads. At the time of the break-in, records indicated Manhattan Police officers were in an adjacent subdivision conducting extra patrol and glass/business checks at another tobacco store in town, due to the recent rise in burglaries of businesses like this one in nearby jurisdictions, police said.
Anyone with additional information or surveillance video is asked to contact Manhattan Police at 815-478-4408.
