CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A new state law restricting the sale of vaping products has been put on hold. The Iowa Department of Revenue decided to postpone implementation.
This comes after several companies filed a lawsuit against the new law a few weeks ago.
The vape products filling the shelves at Central Iowa Vapers in Cedar Rapids are more than just an income to Ashley Hartman, Chief Strategy Officer. She said it also helped her mom quit smoking.
“Inhaling nothing is what’s best for you, but we all know to get off combustible cigarettes, it’s very challenging,” she said.
The new law bans the sale of vaping products that don’t meet the new law requirement to have FDA marking authorization. She said that would mean taking over 4,000 products off the shelf.
“That’s not going to keep these stores alive,” said Hartman. “They don’t rely on selling chips and sodas. This is their livelihood.”
The Iowa Department of Revenue recently announced it would be holding off on the new regulations. According to the Iowa Capital Dispatch, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office agreed with the pause, saying it needed “time to understand the new requirements” and “preplanned holiday obligations.”
“Our hopes are that we can work with the state and find common ground. We have been lobbying for what we believe is to be a better alternative to tobacco products,” said Hartman.
It’s worth noting, that the American Cancer Society, which warns of the dangers of vaping, does not support this law. Hartman said she agrees regulations on her industry are needed, but said this law will only make it more difficult to grow as a business owner.
“It would dramatically affect our business and it would force us to close down our doors if we can’t come to a common ground,” she said.
