Construction season has arrived in North Central Ohio.
Fortunately for motorists in Richland County, most of this year’s work will be confined to Ohio 13 south of Mansfield, according to Kaitlyn Thompson, public information officer for the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The state is repaving both the northbound and southbound lanes of Ohio 13 between Chilton Avenue and Hanley Road, which is a roughly 3½ mile stretch from the edge of the city to I-71.
“That began construction in July of 2024,” Thompson said. “So this is in its second construction season so far.”
Crews will work on the project from now until sometime in November before stopping for the winter.
“The completion of the entire project isn’t until May of 2027,” Thompson said. “This is approximately an $18.5 million project.”
There may be delays throughout the project, but the route is expected to remain open at all times.
“Traffic will be maintained in 10-foot lanes in each direction with barrels,” Thompson said. “This one doesn’t close down the road.”
Ohio 545 to be repaved and widened from Olivesburg to Savannah
The other big project this year will be on Ohio 545 in northern Richland and Ashland counties.
That project will stretch from the intersection of Ohio 545 and Ohio 96 in Olivesburg in Richland County to the intersection of Ohio 545 and Ohio 60/US 250 in Savannah, Ashland County.
“It will include the addition of 8-foot wide buggy lanes on both sides of the roadway,” Thompson said. “The construction cost for this is estimated to be $21.5 million.”
The project is slated to begin sometime in November of this year and will end about October 2026.
“Once the project has an awarded contractor, a pre-construction meeting will be held and one of the items of discussion will be the project’s timeline,” Thompson said.
After that meeting, the state will announce when the road will be closed to through traffic.
“We are actually going to have to close down this roadway for 120 days and detour,” Thompson said. “The only traffic we will be maintaining is local traffic only.”
Is there any construction on US 30 in Ohio?
Mansfield drivers can relax knowing there is no roadwork expected this year on US 30 in Richland County.
“The final inspection was completed between us and the contractor in October of 2023,” Thompson said. “So any punch-list work and finalization work, it looks like they got that all done and squared away.”
Further down the line, though, travelers may find a row of orange barrels on US 30.
“We have a few sections through Wayne County on US 30 that is going to be worked on,” Thompson said.
