One of the most famous social media platforms is also no stranger to legal issues and controversies.
Originally founded in 2004 as a Social Networking platform for Harvard University Students, Facebook grew in popularity based on numerous college students wanting the same platform access at their schools.
Today, Facebook is the world’s largest social media network, with almost three billion users. But the platform has been at the center of more controversies than its rivals at other Social Media Outlets.
Since 2008, Facebook has been accused of allowing or promoting misinformation about political elections to be propagated on their platform. Also, the social media network has been accused of allowing third-party organizations to gain access to Facebook Users’ data.
So Why Are New Jersey Residents Getting Facebook Settlement Money?
A class-action lawsuit was filed accusing Facebook of tracking their users across non-Facebook websites and allowing non-Facebook affiliates to use the Facebook “Like” button to direct social media platform users to third-party websites.
Any active Facebook users between April 22, 2010, and September 25, 2011, were eligible to join the class-action lawsuit. The $90 million settlement with Facebook’s parent company was settled in 2022.
But the Settlement Effective Date was February 2025, which is why it has taken three years for Approved Claimants to receive any money. April 10, 202,5 was the first day that any Facebook Users who participated in the Class-Action Lawsuit received any money.
According to reports, approved claimants received around $40 for their part in the settlement. Naturally, most people forgot about any of this because the deadline to submit a claim with the settlement was September 2022.
Now you may be wondering, “What happened to the rest of the $90 Million?”
Here is a breakdown of how the Settlement Money was distributed:
*Settlement Administration Costs: $2,353,535.26
*Attorneys’ fees: $26,100,000
*Attorneys’ expenses: $3,930,480.87
*Service awards to class representatives: $5,000 each for MDL Plaintiffs and $3,000 each for State Court Plaintiffs
