MIDDLETOWN, CT — Two stores in Middletown failed an unannounced tobacco and e-cigarette compliance check conducted Monday, police said.
The detail was undertaken by Middletown police and the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program and targeted at establishments that sell tobacco and electronic cigarette products. Retailers are required to inspect the IDs of people who appear to be younger than 21 when selling the products.
A total of 26 unannounced compliance inspections were conducted and two businesses failed the compliance check — BD Grocery & Food at 564 Main St. and Newfield Spirit Shop at 970 Newfield St., police said.
The clerks at both stores were issued first-time infraction tickets in the amount of $300, police said.
