The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a New York man who allegedly defrauded an area resident of almost $20,000.
In September of last year, the Sheriff’s Office received a report from a person in Sierra County who felt they had been scammed with a car purchase on Facebook Marketplace.
The person had paid nearly $20,000 for a car that was never delivered.
Investigating further, officials found that the suspect had used fake information to set up his Facebook account and create the ad.
When the suspect received the payment, they immediately deleted all communication methods, which prevented the victim from being able to reach them.
Investigators were able to identify the suspect in December of last year as Donald Gibson of New York, and obtained a warrant for his arrrest.
On January 8 of this year, the New York Police Department alerted the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office that they had taken Gibson into custody.
Gibson was extradited to Sierra County by the U.S. Marshals Service, and is currently being held on $140,000 bail at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada County.
