ESPN: The big news out of camp yesterday was Luis Gil getting shutdown from his bullpen session. Aaron Boone relayed that Gil was feeling tightness in his shoulder, and that the team was sending him to get an MRI. It’s always inevitable that someone goes down in the rotation, but losing Gil before spring is even close to done is going to hurt if he’s out for an indeterminate amount of time. It also disrupts the reigning AL Rookie of the Year’s attempt to grow even further in his sophomore season.
NY Post | Jon Heyman ($): Giancarlo Stanton’s status is still up in the air, but it’s clear that he’s probably going to end up missing Opening Day and then some. With that hole in the lineup, the team has been linked to J.D. Martinez, himself a long-time professional DH. Martinez hasn’t been able to find a team for 2025, one of several vets still hanging around the free agent market, and one of the few who could fit the Yankees’ needs. However, they’re still up against their self-imposed budget limit, so any deal would have to be very minimal if it comes about.
NY Daily News | Gary Phillips ($): Austin Wells made his spring debut earlier than expected, and now another player held out will join him. Aaron Judge is set to make his season debut today against the Astros, after the team held him out from the start of spring to keep him fresh for the regular season. DJ LeMahieu may also be joining him, but there’s a possibility that he stays out until Monday.
Finally, a congratulations to Lucas Luetge on his retirement! The former Yankee played seven seasons in the big leagues, and played two seasons in pinstripes after a lengthy minor league journey from his last days as a Mariner in 2015 until he joined the team in 2021. He quickly made an impact, becoming a Swiss Army Knife for Aaron Boone to deploy at will.
