The Supreme Court of Canada is getting off of X (Twitter).
On February 26th, the official X account for Canada’s highest court posted that it will be “focusing our communication efforts on other platforms.” It proceeded to invite Canadians to follow its official channels on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube to continue to receive updates.
Dear subscribers – moving forward, we will be focusing our communication efforts on other platforms. We invite you to follow us on our LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts to continue receiving our updates. Thank you for your support!

In a statement to The Canadian Press, a Supreme Court spokeswoman said the court wants to prioritize “platforms that allow us to best serve the public and provide relevant information about the court’s work within our limited resources.” She added that the court’s account will remain visible on X “for now” but “will no longer be actively updated.”
The specific wording of “best serve the public and provide relevant information” could be taken as a reference to how X has become a haven for toxicity and misinformation over the past couple of years under Elon Musk’s ownership.
During that time, white supremacists and conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones have been allowed back on X, while Musk himself — one of the platform’s most-followed accounts — has frequently been caught spreading fake news. This has led millions of people to leave X in favour of Bluesky, which recently surpassed 30 million users.
This also comes amid Musk’s allegiance to U.S. President Donald Trump, who’s been making repeated threats to hit Canada with steep tariffs and make the country his “51st state.” A parliamentary e-petition was also initiated last week calling for the South Africa-born Musk to be stripped of the Canadian citizenship he acquired through his mother, Regina native Maye Musk.
The petition, which has accrued over 300,000 signatures at the time of writing, argues that Musk “engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada.” This includes him “becom[ing] a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty. In addition to helping get Trump elected, Musk now serves as the head of the new U.S. Department of Government Agency (DOGE).
Musk, in a since-deleted post, responded to the petition by saying, “Canada is not a real country.”
